How to Invite Friends and Family
to Your Family Tree at OneGreatFamily
If you want to share your growing family tree
with other family members or friends,
OneGreatFamily provides the means. You can email
family and friends a link to view your family tree
or you can send them information on how to join
your group.
Email a Link to Your Family
Tree
If you want someone else to view
the progress of your family tree, but you don't
want them to be able to change information or
become an actual member of your group, you can
email them a link to your family tree.
To
email a link to your family tree, refer to the
following instructions:
- Log into OneGreatFamily. This will take you
to the Group Choose page.
- Click on the link, "Send a friend your
family tree." This link is found under your
group information.
- Fill in the form with the bookmark (anchor)
you wish to email; then fill in the recipient’s
name and email address.
- Submit the form to send the link.
After sending your invitation, you may
want to call or send an additional email to
explain more about OneGreatFamily and your reasons
for using the site.
Invite Others to
Your Group
When you invite others to
join your group, you allow each member to see your
family tree from their own perspective. This means
that each group member can see their own
individual efforts to the family tree. It also
means that each member has the ability to accept
hints and conflicts on behalf of the entire group.
Working within a group is an excellent idea for
any small circle of people who are sharing the
same genealogy records. Group work is ideal for
family organizations who want to assign different
family members to work on different parts of the
family tree.
When you begin your
experience on OneGreatFamily, you choose a
username and password for yourself. You also
choose a unique group name and password for any
group you create. The group name and password can
be shared with other members of OneGreatFamily, so
they can view and work on OneGreatFamily from your
perspective as well.
To invite others to
participate in your OneGreatFamily group, please
refer to the following instructions:
- Log into OneGreatFamily. This will take you
to the Group Chooser page.
- Click on the link, "Invite others to your
group." This link is found on the right-hand
side of the page.
- Choose which group you want to invite people
to join. (This is especially important if you
are a member of multiple groups.)
- Fill in the form with as many people as you
desire to invite to your group. You can send
your invitation to as many as 10 people at a
time.
- Edit the message in the form below. The
message will automatically insert your
information, the name of the recipient, the name
of your group, and your group's name and
password.
- Submit the form to send the invitation.
You may also want to include your
personal username in either message you send. If
any of the individuals you invite choose to become
subscribers, you will get a free month added to
your subscription as our way of saying “thanks”
for spreading the word about our great service.
Those you invite only need to enter your username
in the space provided when signing up for their
own subscriptions.
We hope you are
enjoying OneGreatFamily and that you will want to
share your experience with others.

Q&A: How do I find Church
Records? |
Finding Genealogy Information in
Church Recordsby Lisa South, Certified
Genealogist Before you begin searching for
your ancestors in church records, you have to
determine with which church those ancestors were
affiliated. Often this information is passed down
through the family. An obituary, family bible or
artifact often will give you your clue. If you do
not know which church(s) your ancestors attended,
or if there were no churches of their denomination
close to where they lived, you should conduct a
"spiral" map search. Through land records,
locate where your ancestor lived. Search the
history of that area (many county histories will
mention the churches that were established in that
county) and find which churches were there at that
time and locate the churches and your ancestor's
property on your map. Starting from your
ancestor's home draw a spiral out. Search the
records of the closest church and continue until
you have found the records of your ancestors or
have established that they are not on any of the
church records. Once you locate the church
your ancestors attended, determine if that
Church's records have been published. Many are
online and many can be searched at your local LDS
Family History Library. If the records have not
been published, find out if the old records are
still in the custody of that church. If not,
question the minister; he might know if the
records have been collected to a central
repository. Find out if local libraries or
historical societies have collected church
records. If the church is not extant, the chamber
of commerce or older people in the community may
know where the records are being
stored. Remember, church records are made
to fill the needs of the church not the needs of
the genealogist, so some church records give very
little genealogical information while others are a
veritable gold mine. Tracking down Church
records can take a lot of money (in the form of
long distance phone calls, trips, etc) and time.
Before you make that investment, you'll definitely
want to check OneGreatFamily to see if the work
has already been done by other genealogy
enthusiasts, and which sources they may have
already identified.

Success at OneGreatFamily |
It Works!The following
success story shows what can happen when
OneGreatFamily finds information in your family
tree that can be matched and merged with others:
I have been a member since May of 2003. I
entered a new ancestor on August 6 -- a Katherine
Saunders b 1480 in Surrey, England. I checked my
tree, British Family Lines, the next day. It had
grown from this 1 new ancestor (which was
generation # 17 and a total of 126 ancestors) to
generation 118 and 1443 ancestors!!!
I am so boggled, I don't know where to start!
Just looking at all the names, the unbelievable
antiquity, the history, and the famous people --
it is incredible and so exciting. I never dreamed
it would work like this. I thought I may get lucky
and get back to maybe 1000AD.
Thank you so much for your wonderful program
and site. It has brought so much pleasure to my
family and myself. Much more researching to go on
other family lines! Happy researching!
Kind Regards, Diane Goldsmith
